Spirae provided modeling and control analysis to Ecofys in support of this innovative BPA-funded project. Specifically, Spirae showed how distributed thermal storage resources such as residential waters heaters can provide a significant balancing reserve to the transmission operator while respecting the local constraints of the distribution grid and the comfort requirements of the homeowners. The analysis was performed by conducting a series of time-domain simulations on detailed Spirae-created models of the water heaters and a utility distribution grid.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- For the last few years, this northern Colorado city (population 160,000) has been reducing its greenhouse gas emissions and growing its businesses at the same time. Since 2005, its population has risen by 13.5 percent, but emissions have dropped by 14.7 percent. Last year's drop, according to the city, was the equivalent of taking 71,000 passenger cars off the road. Read More.
