Posted on Jan 10, 2017 in Conferences and Speaking Engagements

Spirae's CEO Sunil Cherian and Peter Asmus from Navigant, co-author, publish white paper entitled Liberating Microgrids (and all DER). This publication puts forward not only a vision for microgrids, but Spirae's vision for Wave®.

Liberating Microgrids Webinar - with Navigant, Spirae, Intel and Caterpillar

At this upcoming webinar, Spirae’s CEO Sunil Cherian, Peter Asmus from Navigant, Geoff Sharples from Intel, and Darrin Johnston from Caterpillar will explore perspectives on what is and what is not a microgrid and challenge long-standing assumptions about microgrids, pointing to a new way to grow markets for distributed energy resources (DER) projects at scale.

In order to scale DER-based energy services, service providers are turning to plug-and-play-type microgrids as strategic service delivery assets. It is all about standardization, simplification, and personalization. An intelligent site gateway connected to a service provider’s headend system enables the provisioning of many energy services to those sites. When deployed to site gateways, sophisticated microgrid software auto-discovers compatible DER and configures them for integrated operations. Simple user interfaces give individual site owners full access to their systems while simultaneously allowing remote DER network operators to manage the system as a whole. When service providers and customers work together to leverage DER to meet clearly defined objectives, DER projects are fast and easy to deploy. Activating energy services at new locations will look much more like Comcast turning on TV and Internet services at a new location than like building a new power plant!

Distributed Energy Resources (DER) such as renewable generation, storage, flexible demand, and smart appliances are revolutionizing the electricity industry. Electric utilities are facing major upheavals on a number of fronts including deregulation and proliferation of Distributed Generation (DG) installations. Emerging technologies and evolving regulations are propelling utilities to deal with challenges such as load defection, renewable energy, and increasing expectations of reliability and security of supply. "CIOs are concerned about the risk of their critical systems being brought down by a major natural disaster, unexpected brown out or cyber-attack," begins Sunil Cherian, CEO, Spirae. "Electric utilities have to maintain a reliable and securely operated distribution system with large amounts of variable generation, storage, and adaptive loads," he adds. Based in Fort Collins, Colorado, Spirae is transforming the business model from one-way electricity delivery to omni directional energy services transactions between prosumers, service providers and markets. Building a Microgrid in a day to power VERGE

Posted on Oct 27, 2015 in In the News

Sunshine, walnut shells, wind, batteries — wrap them all up with some wires, aluminum polls, electricity inverters, a bit of load control software and you’ve got a microgrid. Well, maybe it’s a little more sophisticated than that. But a standalone, renewable power sourced microgrid capable of supplying 15 kilowatts of power continuously was constructed on Monday in San Jose. See Microgrid video from VERGE conference here!
