Distributed Energy Resources (DER) such as renewable generation, storage, flexible demand, and smart appliances are revolutionizing the electricity industry. Electric utilities are facing major upheavals on a number of fronts including deregulation and proliferation of Distributed Generation (DG) installations. Emerging technologies and evolving regulations are propelling utilities to deal with challenges such as load defection, renewable energy, and increasing expectations of reliability and security of supply. "CIOs are concerned about the risk of their critical systems being brought down by a major natural disaster, unexpected brown out or cyber-attack," begins Sunil Cherian, CEO, Spirae. "Electric utilities have to maintain a reliable and securely operated distribution system with large amounts of variable generation, storage, and adaptive loads," he adds. Based in Fort Collins, Colorado, Spirae is transforming the business model from one-way electricity delivery to omni directional energy services transactions between prosumers, service providers and markets. Sunshine, walnut shells, wind, batteries — wrap them all up with some wires, aluminum polls, electricity inverters, a bit of load control software and you’ve got a microgrid. Well, maybe it’s a little more sophisticated than that. EPRI, in collaboration with Department of Energy and the FOA997 microgrid controller project team - Spirae, Enernex and NREL - will hold a workshop on July 30-31 at the CSU Energy Institute. The workshop will review and finalize use cases, microgrid controller requirements and test plan. Spirae will present a live demonstration of the microgrid set up at the Spirae InteGrid Lab.

Spirae will be participating in the National Museum of American History's exhibit on invention and innovation in Washington D.C. This inspiring exhibit titled, Places of Invention, highlights Fort Collins specifically as one of six "places of invention". The exhibit opens on July 1 and "examines what can happen when the right mix of inventive people, untapped resources, and inspiring surroundings come together". Spirae is pleased to announce the reappointment of Ms. Julie Zinn, Spirae's Chief Operating Officer, to the Colorado Workforce Development Council (CWDC). The CWDC is the State Workforce Investment Board and their mission is "to create a business-focused workforce system that effectively helps to prepare Coloradoans for the jobs of today and tomorrow."
The role of the Colorado Workforce Development Council:
Responsible for the continuous improvement of the workforce system, oversight of Workforce Investment Act funds, and ensuring a statewide strategic vision created from the bottom up through Council members and local partners.
Act as a neutral forum for determining the cost of potential regulation and policy to businesses and its impact on the ability of businesses to create jobs.
Focus on business needs to create a talent-based, skilled workforce through the alignment of initiatives in education, workforce and economic development.
Leverage partnerships to identify needs and gaps and create sustainable solutions and their funding.
