The introduction of diverse and distributed resources poses new challenges to grid operators that seek to manage the reliability and stability of electric systems. While current methods for dealing with fluctuations in load are well understood, distributed energy producing resources present additional complexity that requires intelligent infrastructure to ensure in-range voltage and sufficient capacity in the event of planned maintenance, faults or grid reconfiguration.
BlueFin® possesses “grid-awareness,” the ability to analyze topology changes and the effects of those changes on grid controls. Awareness of these changes allows the topology management software to control distributed energy resources to ensure voltage and capacity without disrupting grid operation. This is accomplished through the use of underlying algorithms that continuously estimate the state of the power system. Because of this model-based approach and its distinct architecture, BlueFin is able to constantly check which assets can be called to support system function—including traditional sources like capacitor banks or switches and new distributed resources. This highly refined view of each power system enables customers to improve grid function by providing greater precision and stability.
