As utilities encounter increasing numbers of electric vehicles (EVs) in the next few years, they will need to ensure that they can accommodate the resulting increased and dynamic loads without adversely affecting grid operations. Although traditional infrastructure upgrades would permit utilities to serve these customers, they are costly and do not enable grid operators to utilize these potential “resources on the ground” to support grid function. Spirae’s BlueFin®, on the other hand, allows utilities to meet this demand strategically to ensure these resources work for, rather than against utility operations.
Spirae brings deep knowledge and experience in the integration of EVs to enable utilities to leverage and control the charging of electric vehicles to balance other assets on the grid. Spirae’s experience includes significant research, development and integration assistance for the plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) and vehicle to grid (V2G) activities for Xcel Energy and the County of Boulder as part of the Smart City project in Boulder, Colorado. Spirae also developed the electric vehicle charging infrastructure to support grid functions in the Department of Energy funded Renewable and Distributed Systems Integration project in collaboration with Fort Collins Utility in Fort Collins, Colorado.
