Current approaches to the integration of renewable and distributed resources are based on the belief that the present, relatively small levels of these resources do not require strategic integration. At the same time, prevailing solutions are unable to accommodate significant distributed resources so high levels of these technologies in electricity distribution remain limited.
However, the arrival of these resources in the near future suggests that scalable solutions will soon be required in distribution networks. These solutions will need to embrace new generation sources and increased demand at the same time, without disrupting grid function.
As a unique Active Distribution Management platform, BlueFin™ differs from traditional DMS systems because it combines conventional grid control mechanisms such as Load Tap Changers (LTCs) with the ability to control a high penetration of distributed and renewable energy resources. This is accomplished with an integrated control architecture that uses DER in concert with utility backend systems such as SCADA, DMS, CIS, OMS and AMI. For example, an instance where too much wind generation poses a risk to grid stability could be met with a combination of conventional and distributed resources to compensate for fluctuations in the power system. As a leading ADM platform, BlueFin™ is also able to control smart inverters and the power factor of an inverter to support system function and stability.
Spirae has experience in the integration of an array of resources in diverse distribution networks spanning the intelligent control of feeders and substations to direct control of appliances with dynamic pricing signals. With this expertise, Spirae seamlessly brings these technologies into the grid while quantifiably improving system efficiency and strengthening system function.
