Spirae provided modeling and control analysis to Ecofys in support of this innovative BPA-funded project. Specifically, Spirae showed how distributed thermal storage resources such as residential waters heaters can provide a significant balancing reserve to the transmission operator while respecting the local constraints of the distribution grid and the comfort requirements of the homeowners. The analysis was performed by conducting a series of time-domain simulations on detailed Spirae-created models of the water heaters and a utility distribution grid.
